AIR-POL Paragliders Canopies PL-17 Blackbird

competition paraglider

PL-17 Blackbird

The PL-17 paraglider is intended for experienced pilots (at least part-A licence). It gives an easy take-off, high glide ratio and flying speed. The design of the paraglider features several novel solutions (diagonal cells, main risers with a special speed system, low-drag line system) to allow high performance with proper degree of safety. The aerodynamic layout ensures high range of useful speeds and high manoeuvrability.

The complete paraglider kit includes:

  • canopy,
  • lines,,
  • steering lines,
  • main risers,
  • canopy bag,
  • repair kit (self adhesive rip-stop fabric and line for ad-hoc repairs).

    Technical description

The paraglider canopy, of elliptic planform, is connected to the pilot's harness by a system of cascade lines and four-point main risers with the speed system. The canopy consists of a number of interconnected cells which form a wing when inflated with air. Upper and lower envelope of the canopy is made of Carrington Novare 42 g/m2 zero porosity rip-stop fabric, while the walls of a reinforced 48 g/m2 fabric. Air inlets into the canopy are reinforced and stiffened with Mylar. The canopy design makes use of a novel diagonal cells system which gives better support to the upper canopy envelope (providing most of the lift), and thus allows for a wider interval of line attachment points. Small number of line attachment points, plus the cascade line arrangement gives approx. 30% less total line length, and thus lower drag.
The lines immediately by the canopy have been made from 1.1 mm diameter Dyneema fibre lines made by Ibex Ropes, the intermediate lines - 1.3 mm, while the main lines - 2.4 mm. These feature excellent strength characteristics with low density and extension. Moreover, thanks to low cross-section they allow to reduce the paraglider drag, and thus improve its gliding ratio.
Primary control is accomplished by means of two steering lines. Moreover, the pilot can control the paraglider by pulling the risers and using the speed-system.
Risers distribute the pilot weight load on a system of lines, allowing them to be loaded more uniformly. The four-strap arrangement allows special manoeuvres to be performed (for example the B-stall) or emergency control if required. Risers are equipped with stainless deltas for lines attachment with O-rings for holding the lines position, and a two-pulley speed system.
