Braking parachutes are used to reduce landing run of combat aircraft. This allows to operate the aircraft from shorter runways, and improves landing safety.

Their design is peculiar in that it is made of fireproof material in order to give better longevity of the parachute parts subject to contact with hot exhaust gases from a jet engine. Folded parachute is fitted in a container at the rear end of the aircraft fuselage and when necessary it is deployed immediately after aircraft touchdown.
AIR-POL manufactures braking parachutes for MiG-21 (Russian designation E-7: versions 68, 75A, 76, 94, 94A, 94R, 96A and 96MF) and Su-22 (Russian designation Su-17M4) combat aircraft.
SH-21U-1 and SH-22 parachutes (for MiG-21 and Su-22 respectively) are in the inventory of the Polish Armed Forces and are used by units of the Polish Air Force and the Polish Navy.
